This thesis examines the effects of the transition to multi-party democracy in Niger from 1991-1996, and the subsequent military coup d'Etat, on women's empowerment and women's theororizing and strategizing. The democratic transistion provided the opportunity for elite and middle classwomen to formassociations an NGOs outside of government control for the first time. At the same time it allowed for increasing islamic fundamentalist influence and did not charge the patriachal power structure of nigerien politics.
