This study, which is based upon daa culled during field research in the republic of niger in 1976-1977, considers the problem of political legitimacy in contemporary songhai society. The two major hypotheses of the study are the political legitimacy, erinforced by precarious values and beliefs, is ever-changing and negotiable and that the analysis of political legitimac in society should ne approached from a communicative framework by using the analytical techniques espoused in the ethnogaphy of communication
