This thesis examines marital stability in the muslim hausa town of Mirria, Niger Republic. Data are drawn from the 1968 and 1974 administrative censures of Mirria, interviews with ward heads on wife seclusion, marital histories of 30 Mirria women, 25 diverce cases heard in a local court, and 14 months of participant observation in Mirria between november 1973 and june 1975.
