Résumé :
|
This dissertation examines the changing role of african traditional rulers and provides an in-depth analysis of two chiefdoms in the Republic of Niger: the djerma kingdon of Dosso and the hausa territory of Gobir. The broad thematic concerns are with the political and to some extent economic factors affecting the power, status and influence of traditional chiefs in the contemporary african state. More specifically, yhe study is an anlysis of the complex relationship between the chiefs and the rulers of Niger's emerging state system. The mediation of political integration through traditional elites is shown to be multi-faceted in the consequences: in alternating or combined sequences, they facilitate, stabilize and inhibit change.
