At the end of this retrospective study reporting 170 cases of twins deliveries collected between 1th January to December, 31, 2007 at Issaka Gazobi Maternity (Niamey-NIGER), we arrived at the following conclusions:
The frequency of twin deliveries is of 2,4%. The age of patients is between 15 to 43 years, the least-old has 15 years, the older has 43 years, the age group with the largest number of cases is the 26 to 30 years group, and the 21th to 25 years group. Most patients are without a declared income: 84.7%. Multiparous are most numerous : 41.20%, in 2nd row comes nulliparous with 37 cases out of 170, or 21.80%. Most of these women were referred from other maternities and regions other than the CUN: 73.5% 17 cases representing 10% had never made an antenatal consultation and only 14.1% did more than 5 antenatal clinics. Most of the patients have consulted midwives : 76.5%, 13.5% consulted a doctor and 10% had seen any health professional during the antenatal period.. Patients are admitted for : labor in 24.7% pre-eclampsia in 11.1% retained 2nd twin in 7.6% Prematurity represents 35.88% of all births and extreme prematurity has affected 9.41% of twin births. Caesarean section were carried in 54%. The stillbirth rate is higher among second twins than among the former. The prognosis of the first twin is always better than the prognosis of the second twin. In this study the mortality rate of the first twin is of 8.9% and the second twin mortality rate is of 11.1%. The average length of stay of patients in maternity was 4.6 days, with extremes ranging from 2 to 16 days. We observed 3 cases of maternal mortality : 1.76%.
