Résumé :
|
This is a most useful and attractive little book, which will be greatly appreciated by all who live in West Africa and wish to identify the commoner flowers of the countryside. In it are described some 364 species, and many of these are illustrated by small but precise line drawings. The descriptions are succinct and are couched in simple botanical terms unlikely to deter those who are interested in nature study. A short glossary is provided, and there is also a neat artificial key to aid identification. Trees and economic crops have for the most part been excluded. There is a great need for this type of nature study book in countries where the native plants are not well known by the vast majority of the inhabitants, and where the rapid spread of education is creating a healthy desire to recognize and appreciate the wild life of the countryside. This book helps to bridge the gap between vernacular names known only to village people and the great floras of the botanists. Costing only 5 shillings, it will bring satisfaction and pleasure to many. G.E.T.
