Today Liptako is a small corner of Upper Volta lying along the Republic's northeastern boundary with Niger. In the nineteenth century, before the whites occupied west Africa and imposed new political relationships and news frontiers, Liptako was the westernmost in the the far-flung imperial complex of emirates tha centered on Sokoto, a town now in northwestern Nigeria.
